So here's where the alicorn sisters enter the story. It makes sense to me, considering the timeframe.
In the Season 2 premiere, we learn that Discord ruled Equestria before Celestia and Luna did. However, in Hearth's Warming Eve, we learn that 1) the old pony tribes discovered the land that became Equestria, and 2) that Star Swirl was Clover's mentor. Now, in "Luna Eclipsed," it's implied that Luna (and Celestia by extension) knew Star Swirl personally. However, since they weren't in "Hearth's Warming Eve," that would mean that they met him after the discovery of Equestria, which- look, I'm making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be. Hopefully, this will all make a lot more sense as the comic goes on.

I've always figured Star Swirl was a recent historical figure to Celestia and Luna. I'm sure plenty of people today know what Abraham Lincoln's hat look liked off the top of their heads, for example, and Star Swirl was probably at least as important as Lincoln, considering he seems to have invented half of modern magic at least a thousand years ago.
